Know Before You Go:
This trail is one of our must-sees in the Canadian Rockies!!
The road to Lake O'Hara is not open to the public - instead you must enter the lottery for an in-going bus ticket.
If you are lucky enough to win a campsite permit here, your bus ticket is included. Backcountry campsites and bus tickets can be reserved at parkscanada.ca.
If you are unable to win either of these lotteries (like us) you have the option to hike the road in - it is about 7 miles one way with gradual incline (the walk took us just under 2 hours one way).
If you hike in, you may be able to catch one of the buses going out — at 2:30, 4:30 or 6:30. A one way ticket costs $10 CAD, cash only. There are two buses that leave at 4:30 and is probably your safest bet if you’re trying to snag a last minute seat.
The Alpine Circuit gives you the best overview of the area if you only have time for one day hike.
We recommend doing the loop clockwise to get the hardest climb finished early.
This trail is very exposed so bring sun protection and layers.
The mileage is short but don't underestimate the amount of time required to complete this hike - the going is slow, even on the downhill portions.
If you have an issue with heights you may want to skip this hike - many portions are narrow and hug the edges of fairly steep drops.
Bears are active in this area so come prepared.
