Know Before You Go:

  • An epic day hike option in the North Cascades; if you can only do one hike in Washington this should be it.

  • This trail is extremely popular and the parking lot is small so make sure you arrive really early to snag a spot. There is overflow parking in the El Dorado climbing lot down the road but this will add about 6 mi round-trip to your hike.

  • There is a restroom at the El Dorado trailhead.

  • The road into the trailhead is unpaved the majority of the way but very well maintained with minimal potholes.

  • Cascade Pass, 3.5 mi in, makes an excellent turn around point if you’re looking for a shorter hike but we highly recommend continuing on to the top of the arm for stunning 360 views of the North Cascade peaks.

  • Conditions can change quickly here so bring layers for all weather possibilities; the arm is very exposed and can be quite windy.

  • It is common to see mountain goats and bears in this area so remain alert.

  • There can still be snow on the ground here pretty late into the season; microspikes are useful to have on hand.

  • Reserved permits are required to spend the night here, and camping is only allowed in designated areas.
