Know Before You Go:

  • Underrated backpacking trip or very long day hike that rivals the famous Kalalau in Kauai.

  • Beware! flash-floods are very common on this trail — come prepared for rainy weather.

  • Nicknamed the Z-Trail for constant switchbacks and intense elevation gain.

  • To reach the trailhead: either drive along the steep road with a high clearance vehicle or hike along the unpaved, rocky roads that cars are driving on.

  • The beaches along this trail are not recommended swimming spots due to dangerous currents.

  • A must-do hike; we recommend hiking the Pololū Valley (Awini Trail) on the opposite side of the Kohala Forest Reserve as well or only hiking the Waipio Valley if you are short on time.

  • Port-a-potties available on the black sand beach of Waipio Valley.
