Know Before You Go:
Don't miss out on this must-do trail!
The cinder cones and lava fields are what make this trail truly one-of-a-kind. It is not necessary to complete all 11 mi however we recommend hiking at least 2 miles in before turning around to get a full taste of the landscape.
While you are in the park, try to catch sunrise (with a permit) or sunset!
Bring lots of water and snacks as you will be hiking at 11,000 feet and may experience altitude sickness. Go slowly and listen to your body.
Trade winds tend to cause heavy clouds to form on Haleakala as the day progresses; start this hike early to avoid potential heavy precipitation and obstructed views.
