Know Before You Go:

  • Don't miss out on this must-do trail!

  • The cinder cones and lava fields are what make this trail truly one-of-a-kind. It is not necessary to complete all 11 mi however we recommend hiking at least 2 miles in before turning around to get a full taste of the landscape.

  • While you are in the park, try to catch sunrise (with a permit) or sunset!

  • Bring lots of water and snacks as you will be hiking at 11,000 feet and may experience altitude sickness. Go slowly and listen to your body.

  • Trade winds tend to cause heavy clouds to form on Haleakala as the day progresses; start this hike early to avoid potential heavy precipitation and obstructed views.
